Emergency Day 5 Box Office: Kangana Ranaut’s Film Faces Tough Challenges

Kangana Ranaut’s ambitious film Emergency experienced a significant dip in box office collections on its first Tuesday (January 21). The film, which debuted in theaters on January 17, earned Rs 1 crore on Day 5, bringing its total collection to Rs 12.40 crore, according to Sacnilk. The movie reported a low occupancy rate of 0.79 percent in the Hindi-speaking market.

Directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, Emergency explores a controversial chapter in India’s history. The film depicts the 21 months between 1975 and 1977 when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a nationwide state of emergency. Kangana stars as Indira Gandhi, alongside a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.

Recently, Kangana posted a heartfelt video on Instagram, expressing gratitude to fans for their support but also addressing her disappointment over the film’s challenges in Punjab. In her message, she shared, “Mere dil mein abhi bhi kuch dard hai. Punjab. Industry mein aesa kaha jata tha ki Punjab mein meri filmein sabse acha perform karti hai. Aur aaj ek din hai jab Punjab mein meri film ko release tak nahi hone diya jaraha hai.” (“I still have pain in my heart. It was said that my films perform best in Punjab, and today, they aren’t even allowing the film to be released there.”)

The screenings of Emergency were disrupted in Punjab following protests led by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The SGPC called for a ban on the film, claiming it was objectionable. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami even wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, requesting action against the movie’s release.

As a result of ongoing demonstrations, several theaters in cities like Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, and Patiala refrained from screening the film, further affecting its performance in the region.

While Emergency continues to face these hurdles, Kangana’s message highlights her hope for resolution and her appreciation for the audience’s support amid the challenges.
