The long-awaited announcement of this year’s Academy Award nominations, delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires, has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 23. In the meantime, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies), infamous for spotlighting the “worst” in cinema, revealed their nominees on Tuesday. Joker leads the pack: Folie à Deux with seven nominations, followed closely by Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan, each earning six nods.
The musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, following Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated Joker, has taken center stage at the Razzies with nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are also in the running for Worst Actress and Worst Actor, respectively, and together for Worst On-Screen Combo.
Despite high expectations, the sequel received lukewarm reviews at the Venice Film Festival and underperformed at the box office, earning just $206 million globally against a $200 million production budget. This starkly contrasts the original Joker, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide and won Phoenix the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Interestingly, the Razzies’ official announcement mistakenly reported that Joker: Folie à Deux tied for the most nominations with six when it received seven. However, the Razzies, founded in 1981, are known for embracing their satirical nature, taking such errors lightly.
The organization has faced criticism recently, including backlash for nominating child actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong for her role in Firestarter. They later apologized, calling the decision “insensitive.” Additionally, a category dedicated to Bruce Willis’ 2021 performances was rescinded following his family’s disclosure of his aphasia diagnosis.
This year’s nominees were chosen through votes from over 1,200 participants, each paying $40 annually or $500 for a lifetime membership. True to its spirit, the Razzies remain a pay-to-play venture where anyone can participate, as long as they’re willing to spend.
The “winners” will be announced on March 1, one day ahead of the Academy Awards.
